Admittance (Ship) logbook, 1822-1823.

The logbook of the ship Admittance details a shipping voyage that began in Brazil, to Hamburg and Cuxhaven, Germany, to Havana, Oct. 1822-July 1823. The logbook begins at sea out of Brazil and ends at sea on the way to Havana, possibly because of Capt. Richardson's death. The master was Henry Carwick who died during the voyage; he was subsequently replaced by William Richardson who was appointed by the American consul in Germany. The logbook keeper was Richardson; the ship's home port was Boston. The logbook includes notes on diseases; deaths (including Carwick's); the dismissal of one of the merchant mariners on board for stealing; worship programs on board; a holiday celebration on July 4th; and a description of an execution (by beheading) and executioner. During its voyage, the Admittance spoke the ships Adeline (out of Salem, Mass.), Daphne, Eagle (out of New York), Galitea (out of Newport), Martha (out of New York), Ophelia, Perseverance (out of Salem), and Rising Sun; and the brigs Indus, Stephen, and Washington.

For many years prior to the time of this document, pirates based in Tunis, Tripoli, Algiers, and Morocco on the northern coast of Africa, known as the Barbary Coast, had preyed on ships in the Mediterranean Sea and eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean. European nations made payments to these countries to ensure the safety of their merchant vessels. While the American colonies were under British rule, they were protected by payments of the mother country and the power of the British navy. However, ...
